Sir John Saunders has been appointed as the nominated judge to sit as the Coroner for the inquests into each of those who died in the bombings at the Manchester Arena on 22 May 2017.

Sir John Saunders has been appointed by the Lord Chief Justice, after consultation with the Lord Chancellor, as the nominated judge to sit as the Coroner for the inquests into each of those who died in the bombings at the Manchester Arena on 22 May 2017.

Sir John is a retired High Court judge. He has significant experience trying terrorism cases as the Recorder of Birmingham and as the Presiding Judge on the South Eastern Circuit from 2009 to 2012.

Sir John will assume responsibility for the Inquests immediately. A full legal and administrative team is in the process of being formed in order to support the Inquest process. A Pre-Inquest Review hearing will be held on 18 October at Manchester Town Hall.
